Analysts say that the clash could imperil congressional funding for the UN. The US, which pays 22 per cent of the UN’s administrative budget, is already threatening to block its budget for the second half of this year unless it adopts a set of management reforms.
A lot of people don't like the UN. I'm not sure about it. There are in MHO too many countries in it that are openly hostile to the US yet we pay a big chunk into their budget.

They need to be revamped in order to be more effective. The help that they have given isn't usually enough. They give aid, but many times the guerillas end up with it.

Personally, I think diplomacy is better one on one. Too much outside intervention can do more harm than good.

Let's face it, much of the rest of the world doesn't like the US, for many reasons, some of them justified, some not justified If the UN accurately represents the feelings of those nations, it will not be our puppet. If the UN DOES represent only OUR feelings, it IS our puppet, and will be ignored, and rightfully so, by the rest of the world. If we want to meet with the other nations in peace, and discuss things, and have some sort of functioning dialogue wtih nations unsimilar to ourselves, the UN is as good as it can get.
Well said. Balanced. American???

Most of the world is run by dictators, so don't expect much love at all from them towards America.

Because those with power want to be able to do what they want. That's why the Bush administration still stays at war after the world learned that the WMD excuse was false.

Still, some people presume we went to war for honest reasons. It just goes to show you the effectiveness of propaganda.

FLIP FLAP, FLIP FLOP, FLIP FLOP...

Amb. BOLTON & UN's MARK MALLOCH BROWN

Quote:
The UN's Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch Brown spoke the truth in his speech recently in New York City when he called on the United States, for the first time in a long time, to take the United Nations on as a public partner in its foreign policy.
Quote:
One can see how the frustration among UN officials has grown after reviewing the curious on-again, off-again relationship the UN has had with the Bush Administration in its almost six years in power.
Flip, Flopping. Flip...
Quote:
When George Bush first arrived at the White House, he and his key global aides denounced most international treaties and scorned the UN as ineffective.
...flop
Quote:
But then Bush, in order to rally the world against the Ben Ladin terrorists, got the backing of the UN for an assault on the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks.
Flip...
Quote:
Just as suddenly, in 2003, he derided the UN for not backing his invasion of Iraq.
...flop
Quote:
Then, in yet another abrupt shift of gears, after finding himself isolated in Iraq, he asked for a UN resolution legitimizing America's occupation of Iraq, for UN supervision of three elections, and for the UN's assistance in writing Iraq's constitution.
...flop
Quote:
In 2005, he turned around again and appointed a well-known extreme critic of the UN as Washington's new envoy to the UN, John Bolton.
Flip...
Quote:
Bolton promptly slowed down the reform movement, opposed the creation of the Human Rights Council, thwarted US monies for a new UN building, and is currently threatening to cut off US dues on June 30th if management reforms are not enacted.
and on and on. ...FLIP FLAP, FLIP FLOP

I'll bet the French are f*ckin laughing their butts off at Bush administration, NOW begging for their help in trying to ease the madness in the Middle East. ya think the French have so quickly forgotten the absolute BLITZ of anti France campaign Bush and his thugs in Congress led, including boycotting French tourism, products and of courses the TARDED idea of freedom fries.
The German chancelor is likewise laughing at Bush, and I hope they ask for Rumsfeld to be tried in the Hague for war crimes before they lift a finger to help in arab/israeli conflicts.

The UN's deputy secretary-general, Mark Malloch Brown, said the deaths were a "very serious threat to the whole concept of neutral peacekeeping" and could discourage countries from contributing to the multi-national force.

The four observers were killed during an Israeli bombing at a UN post on the Lebanon border. Although Malloch Brown said he accepted the statement by Prime Minister Olmert expressing "deep regret" for the deaths, he continued to harbour "serious concerns" about the actions of the Israeli military.

"Peacekeeping is a dangerous business and we depend on the support of the international community," Malloch Brown said. "When people die it is not a simple accident to be brushed away."
Rice returns to Israel to push UN peace plan

Israel can agree to an international force being sent to south Lebanon as there may not be such a force.

It seems to me that Brown's comments were largely descriptive and not normative. What will the short, medium, and long-term effects be, if any?

Way above my competence. May be you could indicate "what will the short, medium, and long-term effects be, if any?".
