Serbia and the West- temptations and another slap in the face
Date Posted: Sep 16, 2008 at 01:01 pm - Comments (0)
Yesterday, the EU decided not to unblock trade agreement between them and the Republic of Serbia. 25 countries were in favor of unblock but, as the consensus is necessary, Netherlands and Belgium ruled out differently. Reason? Serbia refusal to unconditional, full co-operation with Hague tribunal.
First, Serbia is co-operating with Hague, for instance, we delivered Radovan Karadzic a month ago and he was named World`s most wanted war criminal. Plus, the big part of people here don`t like Hague and don`t like the idea that an unfair court trials our people, no matter what they did (I`ll return to this one later). So, it isn`t strange why delivering people(and the Hague list seems not to have an end) every now and then isn`t most popular politics for having rest at home.
Second, connected to first, the West should give us a brake for some time. Come on, give us something nice, some donations, help, some agreement(not blocked). All we get from you are slaps. Supporting Albanian terrorists, supporting Kosovo independence (honor to exceptions) keeping us isolated, giving us new conditions every two months, setting free people who done terrible things to our people, and giving silly sentences to another. YES, the Hague did it again! General Delic, head of Bosnian army in the civil war, chief commander of Muslim Talibani forces(yeah, the same group the USA is in ``war`` with) operating on the Balkans, which committed hideous atrocities... got 3 years, just yesterday.
So, my message to the West is- stop pushing us around. The democratic forces in the country are giving tremendous efforts to annul effects of your Serb-mocking politics. Save us from yourself.

The democracy in its worst... Serbian elections.
Date Posted: May 17, 2008 at 09:56 am - Comments (0)
In Serbia, we had parliamentary elections, a week ago, possibly the most important ones in the last 8 years... The reason why these elections were so important lies in the current political condition. The majority of European countries supported Shiptari (Kosovo Albanians) in their secessionists` movement, which was a great strike against Serbia. In the same moment, Russia, with its great economy and political revival became a very tempting alternative for Europe in position of Serbian partner. We, the pro-European Serbs, were quite nervous about elections outcome. The Democratic Party, whose member I am, was a biggest chance for continuance of European integrations` politics. The Liberal democratic party (LDP) was our only ally in that matter. On the other side, there was a Serbian radical party and ``Democratic`` party of Serbia, whose president is Vojislav Kostunica, former hero of October revolution, man who had at least 4,5 million of people behind him that day and now his party can only gain about 500 thousands of votes, and only in coalition with stronger party, NS (New Serbia). Kostunica betrayed the Revolution, which made him a president out of completely mediocre politician, he betrayed the people who spilled their blood for country without Milosevic, and he continues to betray people who still believe he`s a progressive, European politician. The elections outcome?
The Democratic Party`s coalition, named ``Together for European Serbia`` (ZES) gained 102 seats in parliament out of 250. A fantastic result. The LDP got about 5,2 %, 13 mandates, which is just about enough to reach the census. A good result for ``unpopular`` politics this party presents in public. The Serbian radical party (SRS) was DEFEATED in these elections. The ``Democratic`` party of Serbia was DEFEATED in these elections. In fact, the only one who won these elections, besides ZES were the socialists (SPS). Also known as Slobodan Milosevic`s party. They got about 10% of votes, their best result since... well, Milosevic, with a slight remark- Milosevic fixed the elections` results. Anyway, the SPS changed a bit, on their top they have people who weren`t exactly hardcore in the time of Sloba. But, the true democratic voters still have some not so pretty feelings about them. Still, ZES needs their support to form the goverment, because LDP+ZES is not enough to create parliamentary majority. If you look better, there are no significant difference between ZES and SPS political programs, as their ``deepest care`` are social rights. Still, Sloba`s party...
But, there`s another possibility I got realized about, the morning after the results, while I was fighting with hangover. The DSS, SRS can also try to get the SPS support! And they did! The DSS reached rock bottom, allying with the SRS, the most backward and conservative party in Serbia. Once again, they slapped most of their votes in face, just to stay at power. More disturbing is possibility that SPS accepts this bargain. If they do that, they would become LOSERS in the game of elections, SRS would become WINNERS, as well as Kostunica, and WE, the majority of Serbian people, would become LOSERS, also, although we clearly showed our willing for Europe, reforms, changes, investments, travels, etc.
If this scenario becomes true, the old quote ``Democracy is the only system where 5 idiots can over vote 2 intellectuals`` will also come true. The 5 idiots from that line would be Nikolic (SRS), Kostunica (DSS), Ilic (NS)... Dacic and Palma (SPS).
The two ``intellectuals`` would be DS and LDP.
But the more important conclusion is that the people put idiots, as well as intellectuals in those positions. Only, one idiot, possibly the biggest, but definitely the most unscrupulous one, Kostunica, tricked them to get there! He would be, sorry, he would STAY no one, if he only didn`t say `` I`ll give you Europe`` eight years ago, and now he`s saying `` I``ll take away Europe from you!``
The epilogue of this real drama is to be seen in the forthcoming days, weeks, or even months...

History Reminder

I`m not happy with how people in foreign countries see my country. Most often, they characterize us as villains, fascists, and genocidal. Serbs are neither of those.

What ruined my country`s image happened in the 90s, when Yugoslavia ``died`` as a country, when the civil war started. Some say that the only sadder thing, than a civil war, is winning one. Although it seems Croatia and Bosnia won (they did get their independent states), the whole war in Yugoslavia was a big lose for everyone, which is clear even today, as we still feel the consequences.

But, amongst all ``losers``, Serbs were the biggest one. We were the only ones who suffered isolation, sanctions and embargo. Those days people were fighting each other over a peace of bread, the inflation was enormous, and those rare ones, who were employed, couldn`t buy few meals with their month salary. Besides, in the Western media began a campaign against Serbs, presenting them as nation of villains, responsible for everything bad that happened on this area.

That simply isn`t true. Serbs committed most of the crimes- again not true. Presenting Serbs as the guilty ones was logical for Western leaders, as they had to take someone`s side, and Milosevic was the only one who didn`t want to listen to their orders. All the way, that is, because he was a marionette for some time, and then he was recognized as ``peace guaranty on the Balkans``, before he decided to stand up resulting in change of his title to ``Balkan butcher``.

Again, I`m not saying Milosevic was innocent, he was a villain, no queston about it, but there is absolutely no difference between him, Tudjman and Izetbegovic (besides Tudjman`s mocking of Serbs and Jew victims in WWII, and Izetbegovic dreaming of 100% Muslim Bosnia and inviting Muslim extremists to help him in that cause). They were all scumbags.

But, Serbia lost it`s positive image, better said in the eyes of foreign people, we all, collectively, got a reputation of nothing less than devils in human bodies.

Serbia, with a 1000 years history. Serbia`s whose initial victory against Turks in 1389 was celebrated in Paris, with Notre Dame bells ringing in that honor. Serbia, who fought both of the World wars, on the ``good`` side, always against the occupators. Serbia, who achieved the first Allies victory in the WW I, but had the biggest casualties comparing to original population- over 15% died, which resulted in a demographic disaster, which is still felt today. The king of England, draw his sword and said he won`t put it away until Serbia is free again, also during the World War One. In the World War Two, Serbia was the only country in surroundings to oppose Hitler! And today it`s called fascistic!

Our role in losing good name is great, and more significant, but maybe some people from outside should also ask themselves; can they forget history so quickly, can they neglect facts which undoubtedly say that this people is heroic, peace loving in its core, proud... ? Nobody can`t change so rapidly, and in such an opposite direction ``over night`` from humanist to fascist. Our current reputation is not deserved, which is left for time to prove, as new generations are waiting to take over...

One encounter with foreigners
Date Posted: Apr 12, 2008 at 02:32 pm - Comments (0)
Three years ago, when I was still in high school, I took part in a video link conference between my compeers from United Kingdom, Bulgaria and FYROM. The topic of discussion were European integrations, our country`s position in that process, etc. In the end, everyone could ask other side questions freely. The first question, me and my friends received was ``What do you think about Ratko Mladic?``.
It wasn`t pleasant. Now, and then, I understood the curiosity of our fellow debaters, but again, it`s not a nice feeling to know that the first association, the first question someone wants to ask you, is about war criminal(s).
What was even worse about that question, was who it was addressed to. I repeat, I was still in high school, my friends, also, and if I might say, that was a very solid, ambitious group of young people. But, it is clear that young people here will be hostages of elders` screw ups (sorry for the language) for another few years, maybe even more.
And the guy from UK didn`t help asking us about Mladic, although we were 6, or 7 years old when he did, what he did. Here is maybe a good spot for me to say a great group of my people is embarrassed with what he did, and the others would be, too, if they were ready to open eyes.
I can`t justify those who are still ``blind``, some of them where victims of massive propaganda, and most of them are uneducated, and are too old to ``re-educate``. The biology, the time, the new tendencies in our society, cultural, economic and education development, will eventually put all those things on a margin. It would be ideal if the war criminals from Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Albania pay for what they did, but unfortunately, that won`t be always case (Haradinaj, for example).
My point still is, the elders should clean their mess, finish with the trials, prosecutions, apologies, retributions, etc., things they started, so that new generations can start good things, without dirtying their/our hands with their trash.
The best thing the rest of world can do about that is give some break for us, and give new generations a ``clean status``.

Introduction!
Date Posted: Apr 12, 2008 at 01:30 pm - Comments (0)
First of all, I wish to thank Volconvo for allowing me to express my opinion, through regular topics and through this blog. I hope it will be of interest to everyone who sees it, and, of course, discussion and feedback are very welcome.

What I will try to do with this blog, is to post at one place, some facts about my country, which is, by my experience, often misunderstood by a lot of people ``outdoors``, at this forum, as well. I will try to be as objective as it`s possible while discussing my homeland, and therefore will use only checkable information. Again, here on this blog, but outside of it, too, I`ll never say anything like ``my compatriots are perfect`` ; my only objective, as I said, is to show a different side of story, the one which has nothing to do with: war, atrocities, criminals... in few words, stuff strangers often associate with us, but also stuff big majority of my people are disgusted by.

Thanks for the attention. Hvala na paznji.
