Black Blood Brothers--another vampire anime. You will see a pattern. A little bit cuter than some of the others, but still pretty serious.
Never even heard of this one. Whats it like?

    I heart vampires ^^

Me too. It's kinda short. The plot is that the main character, who was a hero in an alliance of humans and vampires that defeated a dangerous clan of mutated vampires, is targeted for revenge by the survivors of that clan. He just wants to live quietly with his little brother in the hidden city where vampires and humans coexist.

Can never go wrong with existential-psychoanalytic variety.

    Neon Genesis Evangelion
    The Big O
    Serial Experiments Lain

.hack//SIGN looks nice, has great music, and good characterization, but it is handicapped by an excess of dialogue and a defficiency of action.

Mobile Suit Gundam: 8th Mobile Suit Team is probably the finest specimen of that "sub-genre" of mecha since the original series/movies.

Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the better anime, but the manga is much better. Too much better. Fullmetal Alchemist as an anime is too much in its shadow to stand out as one of the best.

As far as movies goes, the End of Evangelion stands as more of a replacement for the final episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, so it won't be put into the consideration -- pretty much everything Hayao Miyazaki makes is brilliant, but Princess Mononoke is especially so.

Act that your principle of action might safely be made a law for the whole world.

    Hmm thanks for the responses.

I'm borrowing Ghost in the Shell. I guess nobody likes it? It's the stand alone complex one, first series I guess.
Some anime directors just aren't good storytellers. Ghost in the Shell looks pretty, has a few moments of cool action here and there, but just gets bogged down in monologues and one-sided dialogues. They spend so much time telling and very little time showing.

i find most anime to be way too child like, even the gross gory stuff is just a middle schoolers wet dream. Akira, however, is a GREAT film. And cowboy Bebop, though the movie is stupid, many of the episodes are great. That aside, you can at best usually only expect good art from an anime because the movies make NO SENSE. "X" being one of them! No sense!

yeah is that on he nose dialogue just the only way Japanese people write?

why is it that japanese anime is retarded and japanese film can be overly complex and character driven. Visitor Q, Bird People of China, Ran... good japanese story telling

I'm sorry, but I can't help but pick on the stupidity and immaturity of this. First of all, mutated vampires. Like I said, childish cartoons. Second of all, targeted for revenge. Pointless confrontation, especially because he isn't dangerous to them anymore? And third of all the idea of a hidden city where vampires and humans coexist. Vampires suck blood! According to all vampire stories it's like an overwhelming desire! And, assuming humans don't like vampires sucking them dry, the idea of a city where they could coexist is ridiculous.

I'm sorry phoneix, I'm just not seeing it.

We get it: you don't like anime. Believe it or not, that's not what the thread is about.

And I think you're missing the point here. In vampire media such as this, vampires are not necessarily mind-controlled, blood-sucking, 2-dimensional killing machines. They get a more intelligent and thoughtful treatment. They have consciences, and the protagonist vampire subdues his inner nature in order to save others from harm. This is not exclusive to anime. The Anne Rice novels, for instance, have characters such as these. "Underworld" did too. It is a demonstration that a person cannot be all good or all evil.

Geez. Does anyone else think it's odd that I'm the open-minded one here?

The only anime I have been able to watch consistently are Samurai Champloo, Full Metal Alchmeist, Trinity Blood, and my girlfriend loves Inuyasha.

I never got into the Bleach fad. The friends I had at college my first year we're the ones who waited for the new episodes to get translated and subbed so they could torrent them right away to watch them. That show is not my style.

But I suggest the 3 that I have watched....and Inuyasha if you like a lot of filler, talking, and love story.

I'm currently in search for a new anime series to spend my non-studying/smoking hours on.

Ohhhh, and GunGrave...that show is sick.

I used to watch Inuyasha, but then I found out how the series ends and no longer had any desire to see it.

    How about this question:

Where do you find free shows to download. I have a mac so it has to be a friendly download program.

Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Outlaw Star, FLCL, Ghost in the Shell(series) all great shows to start off with.

I know your type. You think, "I'll just get me a costume, rip off the neighborhood kids." Next thing you know, you've got a jet shaped like a skull with lasers on the front!
