Haha, I hate gum too. They had this disgusting idea at my school called the "Gum Wall". To get everybody from putting their gum all over the school they put some big wooden boards against a few walls around the school and painted "Gum Wall" on them.

It's just pretty sick in my opinion. Imagine being the kid who ends up being shoved against one of them.

It kind of distracts you from doing anything useful.
I find music in and of itself rather useful. More than as a distractor, music has not unlike any other form of art unlocked a genius of some of the greatest minds in history.

Now I will grant you that today's music cannot compare with the beauty and grace of some music past, however music also functions to explain universal truths or to tell a story.

Red Hot Chili Pepper's song: Under the Bridge tells the story of one of the band members who was going through a drug addiction in Los Angeles and who actually left the group for awhile because of his excessive drug use.

Music is a story told in a different fashion than plain words and I think anything universally significant can and should be gleaned from listening to music, no matter what genre....even rap.

For me at least, music is philosophically engaging, and well hell it's pretty fun to move and sing.

I'm sure things often seem less boring or less tedious when you do them to a rhythm...

It's just you know.. I've seen my friend's itunes account. He has so many songs, and he's listened to each of them at least five times. Some songs as many as twenty times.

I dunno, that just makes me feel like it's such a waste of time to just sit there and listen to music.

Wiggin - dont mind my interjection but.

As a musician, I can say its difficult to have music on and not be constantly distracted by its amazing characteristics. But at the same time music feels a part of me, and sometimes sitting there and hearing music while writting an essay or long post often gets you motivated (for me at least) also its a time where i often appreciate certain thechniques used because you hear random things you have heard before in the music.

Calming music definately sets a tone of study and focus for me personally.

My media player isn't working right now, so I'm listening to myself humming a sea shanty.

Gordon Lightfoot - The Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle

Lightfoot sure loves them songs of sea-faring disaster.

I have no problem with music... hell, I'm singing in a solo competition tomorrow and might join my neighbor's band. I just don't see the point of listening to it.
