And why?

I raise this topic because I get the impression that many Americans have a very low opinion of lawyers. This is interesting because lawyers are held in high regard in other countries (such as those in Europe and many parts of Asia). Is this because only American lawyers are bad? Or does the problem lie with Americans themselves? What do you think folks?
