Although its unlikely to impact earth around 909,000 - 1 chance (how they worked that out i dont know) it is kinda scary looking into the future at all these asteroids that could potentially ruin life on earth as we know it. I think there should be some sort of international program to take out such risky asteroids, the idea is not as pointless as we may come to believe. And in this world i dont think we can rely on bruce willis to drill a hole into an asteroid harder then any material we have here and to blow it in half perfectly with a nuke.
Heres one of many articles about the asteroid http://edition.cnn.com/2003/TECH/space/09/...reut/index.html |
btw, Armaggeddon the movie is literally the most scientifically inaccurate film I've yet to see. The energy required to move that massive texas sized asteriod apart at such a rate is equal to or more than the energy produced by the sun in one second (I'll have to look it up but its around that).
Anyway, there are always rogue asteriods flung around and the gov'ts don't really take it that seriously...they'd rather spend billions are weapons that would probably never be used than on equipment for detecting ELE causing astro bodies.
It kind of shows how shortsighted our politicians etc are.
