Some of the arguments against some things being protected by, or made equal by, the law, is that it represents a society's acceptance, etc.

I don't beleive that. I reject that utterly. No society's people will ever fully support any law. There are always opponents.

Bigots don't want civil unions for GLBTI because, in their view, it implies acceptance by all society. I am just uttely irked by these sort of arguments.

Does the legality of pollution indicate we accept it? No!
