Honestly, I don't know. On the surface it certainly seems as though we are, but there are so many things at high levels going on I'm not sure the election is even relevant to where this country is going.
When discussing global issues like the Cold War and the threat of Communism back in the early 70's, I used to say I would stop worrying about it as soon as I saw a McDonalds appear in "Red" China. Well, NOW they have McDonalds AND a big Microsoft research facility there, so I ain't worried. I suspect the powers that be stopped worrying about that a LONG time before the rest of us did, but it was convenient for them to let us fret about it.
That doesn't mean I'm not worried, but the concern is now how we act regarding terrorists (a group NOT usually associated with international power brokers), the envoronment and the economy. IMO Bush is NOT the man for these jobs. However, I am hopeful he will not be allowed to go too far by the globally influential.
I am not kidding myself here. I believe there are powers in the world we know nothing about yet must assume they are there and invisible for a reason. That of course IS an assumption but one I came to by logic and observation. I hope for the best.[/b][/quote]
Well I suppose I disagree with you then. The Soviets were driven to the ground, yes-and now we don't have much to worry about as far as another super power. However, I belive the next thing which we must do is save us from ourselves.
We're in massive debt, we pander to global conglomerates, we're loosing money-civic organizations are at an all time low, the voice which the people of the United States are supposed to have is getting smaller and smaller. Imperialism reeks from the deeds which we are involved in, Pat Bucanan the staunch conservitive is even saying that we're becoming an imperialistic empire, we have NO real international threats however our millitary industrial complex is getting bigger and bigger wilst our domestic front is getting frivolous, an amendment which would acually bar a minorities rights is in progress (gays), both parties are inflated with greed and serve no better purpose than to decide on issues which will better serve their corperate contributers.
What is happening to America? The gap between poor and rich is the highest in America, than in all westernized countries. We make, on average, less money than all westernized counties. We work more houres than almost all westernized countries. The top 10 percent of highest income Americans own about 95 percent of the wealth.
Terrorism is hyped beyond belief. If we would just tackle a few internation problems which we contribute, this would drastically cut the chances of another terrorist attack-UNLIKE millitary occupation, which rouses millitias and sparks even new terrorist organizations.
The "public owned" air waves do not belong to us. We cannot get our voice heard on any major network on television. The media is now more consolodated than ever, with only a few owners of practically all the nations networks, and even newspapers.
An act has acutally passed through congress which allows the government to spy on any citizen(Patriot act), thus abandoning the main principals of our country, and effectively tearing the very fabricof our so-called "democracy".
Twenty-five percent of the worlds prisoners are in United States prisons. A huge chunk of our workforce is behind bars. We have more than 3 million people incarcerated. This is MORE than the Soviet Union once had, and if you remember was a common critique during the cold war.
We consume more than anyone by massive margins, we pollute more than anyone by massive margins. More people within the United States are on anti-depressants than any other country. We put criminals who rob banks in jail for life, and all the wile a corperate criminal, for stealing ten+ times the ammount of cash gets a mere two years in a hospitable jail.
I could go on.
We are in deep shit my friend, we're a nation in distress and we don't even know it yet.
