What kind of world would it be if the whole Iraq and war on terror crap just suddenly disappeared? A boring one. People need to turn on the news in the morning and know there is something major happening with the world.
Admitedly they don't want it to be bad necessarily, but if it's always good news then it's just plain boring. That's why newspapers sell better when there is something really bad happening. No-one ever watched the news so much as the days of and after 9/11.
Ignorance, and the consequences of it--though the likes of you and I must continue to despise it--is part of what makes the world go round.
