Laws don't legislate morality, and the companies in question are not exactly bastions of ethics. The point is, they're spouting statistics that fly in the face of economic reality. New York City lost more than a quarter of a million jobs in the last three years. No fucking wonder CD sales are down. We don't need Sherlock Holmes to find out why electronic theft is up.
