not really, north, central and south america as well as most of africa were controlled by the spanish, french and portugese... a quarter of the world? not in population, control perhaps, but not at the same time... why is english the global language? because america invents the technology and the entertainment for most of the world... winning the world wars helped as well... but english is not the only language spoken in the world...
