Because any handout offered to me is offered to everyone else. Since the government has to steal 3 dollars for every dollar it gives as a handout, I could go to college much easier on the money if they had not already stolen it from me, so it would be availabkle to 'handout'...
In response to this I think that the universities should still be free. If the government had not already 'stolen' money, poorer people woulld not be able to study at university due to the high costs. It encourages them (myself included) to apply for universities without worrying (too much) about the possible debts. At the moment, I am able to go to University but I could easily see many people who could not afford it. This would be cutting off opportunities and althoguh they could still reach well paid jobs, employers would be more likely to choose people with degrees (which is understandable as they would appear to be better), and so this would restrict the type of jobs available to the students: increasing the gap between the rich (who can afford university and can gain degrees) and the poor (who cannot). I believe everyone should have equal opportunity, and should not base their lives on how successful their parents are. |
