| Taking off from an example you brought up, the fat dumb jock type.
I have nothing against jocks, because we don't really have a jock class in GB, or at least where I was. You simply floated or sank at my schools, and it usually depended how likeable a person you were, or useful. Now that bits said, the real bit. Stupid people at University. I believe any, regardless of what you've done in the past, or how poor you are, or what you intend to do with the knowledge, or even if you want to do frankly daft courses, like gold course management, that you should be able to go to University. However, if your stupid, you shouldn't. The idea of stupid people being allowed into University just baffles me. Take my courses at Keele University, Politics and International Relations. This University has a 5* rating for this course, top 5% of the world universities for this course. You should think those coming here would be damned good. In general, they're not. In the political sociology module of 1st year, we had these tutorial groups. The first session began with him asking the people names, their interests in politics and if they are party members and affiliates. Out of a group of about 15, there was 4 people in the room interested in politics, and that includes me and the tutor. After the 3rd session, I realised something. I am the only one whoever answers questions with more than stock answers off the page they took from notes put in front of them. I am the only one who can answer questions without looking at those pages. And I'm the only one who doesn't stare blankly at the tutor for 30 seconds before answering. And god forbid he ever ask a question that doesn't have an answer in the notes before them, or demands wider material than what is before them. These people have severe lack of knowledge of: Politics, History (anything but WWII that is), nothing AT ALL it seems in the way of Geography, the simplest of philosophy, or even basic literature. Granted, I will be at least knowledgeable in these areas because I like them, but for fuck sake you think someone who goes to University would be intelligent. How the hell does someone get to 18 without knowing about where Brazil or the Congo is, who Homer is, what the French Revolution was about or what Locke's politics were? Arghh, your doing Politics, why do you know nothing about this subject?
These people it seems simply must have learned the exact points they were taught for their A-levels, just the answers, never the understanding. But at least I can say that no-one gets into our University's because they can play a sport well.
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.
