Yep, the tendency to gain weight easily is genetic. But it has to be activated by lifestyle. One can compensate for genetics by adjusting carloic intake and physical activity accordingly.
Your mother may have a thyroid problem or something, because what you describe is way beyond the bounds of a genetic tendency.
