My guess is that McCain is actually ahead by a couple points right now. There are a lot of people, white and black, who will tell pollsters and friends that they'd vote for him, but when they actually get in the booth they won't. It's called the "Bradley effect", from when a black mayor of LA was predicted by the polls to win the race for governor, but didn't.
