You miss one important factor that this seems to be ignorant to - the crime or "felony" itself.
This in my view should depend entirely on how serious the action is. As far as i am concerned, some serious crimes are not punished hard enough these days so it seems strange to think that minor crimes would be punished with life imprisonment.
