Rather is could have been that Chavez didn't want a border war that would escalate fast with a Colombia, which has a battle tested military, 15 million more people and would recieve weapons and money support from America.

LOL, it is mutual cooperation. Just because the US government and military helps a country doesn't make it always a bad thing. The leftist and rightist guerilla and drug cartels are merciless and brutal people. I am sure many Colombians do not share your views.
