First, we should strengthen the base of the economy, by putting better tools and information into the hands of the average citizen. We should invest heavily in 3d printers, which, once developed, could make each home a manufacturing center, able to produce for itself all those tangible goods for which we once went to Wal-Mart. The manufacturing sector, from which we've lost so many jobs and so much infrastructure, will be rendered just as obsolete as blacksmiths. The only thing we'll need large factories for is large goods, like cars, and that won't even be absolutely necessary, since 3d printers can print out more of themselves, in a bigger model to be assembled by the user, if necessary.

Along with this, we should ensure the freedom of information, so as to maximize the effectiveness of the internet. Both patents and publishing should be reworked, with compensation received in full before the product is made public. The designers and artists will entrust their finished product to a bank, and advertise the account number and the dollar amount necessary to release the product. Anyone who is interested can deposit any amount of money into the account. When the account reaches the designated level, the funds are turned over to the artist/designer, and the information, be it book, music, or design for a product, will be released to the internet, never to be controlled again. In this way, everyone will have all the information there is, but designers can still be paid for their work, and, once again, entire industries are rendered obsolete.

Once this is done, we can well and truly enter the age of automation, which should be concurrent with a general socialization: provide a living wage, health care, housing, education, and transportation to every citizen (since they're almost all out of a job, at this point).

America should then focus on exotic materials. We already lead the world in designing nanostructured composites, as well as finding new applications for old stuff, like turning silicon or carbon into Aerogel, or rolls of woven carbon fiber. All the empty factories abandoned by the obsolete manufacturing sector should be replaced with materials plants. This is our new industry.

So, America should have three major exports: food, materials, and designs. We'll hardly need to import anything, since every house can produce their own plastic flags, G.I. Joes, spark plugs, etc. Our greatest import will be educated designers, wishing to take advantage of our information market.

Of course, all this is pointless, if we can't maintain the quality of our own education.
