And its not rugby, its called rugby league or simply league, theres some differences between it and the game known as rugby or its full name rugby union.
It would be like me calling gridiron rugby.
Both sports incidentally branched off from rugby to begin with.
And pigskin is an expression for what gridiron balls were once made of in the early days of the sport, they then went to leather, and then synthetic.
I played rugby league, not gridiron, and as far as I know before we had synthetic footballs, it was only ever leather.
A lot of people do that, not just Christians.

Their Jewish customs, and may have some logical reason to have existed we don't know about now.
One of their customs was also to make sure there was never any spilled grain on the floor, because it would attract bugs.
