Christianity (and all theism for that matter) only attracts followers because it offers an answer to questions that have no answers. It is in our nature to question existance, and Christianity takes advantage of that nature.
As Halofan48 points out Christianity offers strong enticements and also strong warnings of divine retribution. Atheism doesn't do that.
