What is the harm of talking to Hamas? Giving them legitimacy? Please, they already have legitimacy amongst the Palestinian people and much the Arab and Muslim people. If peace will be brokered then it must be with Hamas. Israel doesn't have to accept anything, but the silent treatment only insures more violence.
The best way to pacify an enemy is direct talks! |
If anything not talking to them gives them legitimacy, it just gives them yet another "victim" card to play in the whole mess. In my opinion though Carter is not the man who should be talking to them. Israel should be talking to them directly, not through the US or the EU or whoever. Israeli politicians though garner too much support from the more extreme elements in Israel, in particular the religious settlement movement, most of whom believe that Israel should stretch from the Red sea and the Med to the Euphrates. Couple that with the lot in the strip and west bank who want to drive the Jews into the sea I don't hold out much hope. But all we can do is try I suppose.
