The commandments are the foundation for all Christian law. If you abide by the 10 commandments, by almost any account, you are a genuine Christian, living by the code of ethics summed up by them. The definition of sin is separation from God ... the 10 commandments are brief instructions on how to obtain unity with God ... so to call something a sin, most Christians would argue it must violate at least one commandment.
