What would life be without religion? Doesn't that essentially kill alll hopes and dreams?
No. It simply moves them from the realm of the fantastic to the realm of our physical reality. Hopes and dreams are still possible, but they're realistic and conform to the constraints of reality.

What about big questions like how did we get here or what comes after death?
We attempt to seek natural answers to those questions. We don't use the idea of gods to comfort us in our lack of knowledge. We acknowledge our lack of understanding. We are willing to admit there's much about nature and the universe we have yet to understand.
