You miss something. Republicans don't have a set ideology aside from anti-gay and pro-gun and on occasion anti-abortion. Other then that everything is fluid. Thus they can disown 'their own' on certain issues because they can freely change the ideology to disown a belief they formerly had, such as small government, low spending and fiscal conservatism.
