You say Jesus had nothing special, but over one billion people believe in his teachings, and many more pay him resepct.

Egyptian mysticism was a massive influence on early Christianity; probably the way of thinking which allowed Christians to extract themselves from Judaism. Platonism and Aristotelianism were also strong influences (Aristotelianism influenced early Islamic theology as well), but they came later.
A person who has not studied ancient Mediterranean cultures will not appreciate this, but probably the most spirit-minded peoples out of antiquity were the Egyptians and the Christians, and they were very spiritual in much the same ways.
