What about the ones that don't read, or fall for the ads and still get sick? I'd say psychology would be a very small percentage of the reasons for some poeple getting ill. If they aren't really ill then they can get medication to mend their mental health before it actually harms their bodies.
What I was trying to show is that even before science really got involved people were suspicious of it, obviously not a lot of people, just a minority of people. People may have been superstitious, but it didn't stop them from smoking, so their superstition wasn't very strong.
