1. learning about things does not necessarily mean you cannot think for yourself. I don't think the two are related at all. There are uneducated people who can and cannot think for themselves, and there are educated people who can and cannot think for themselves.
2. The fact that they are using knowledge to create 'dumb' things isn't because they are stupid. Its because dumb things sell. Its more a matter of greed then a matter of stupidity. Also, because more people spend time on things such as the internet and games then before, is not an example of a dumbing society. Because of technology, we have less work to do, therefore more time on our hands. Not everyone likes to read complex
Im not sure how you would teach someone to think, but I believe that Advanced English here does, or something similar anyway.
We do not learn what a noun is, and the structure of an essay.
We study texts, and relate them to society, humanity, human nature, or a variety of other concepts.
eg. We studied Blade runner and Brave New World - the topic was 'In the Wild'.
We discussed what makes humans human, what is 'barbaric' and what is 'civilised', consumerism, globalisation, genetic engineering, happiness vs freedom and what ever else you can draw from those texts. I finished school a while ago, so I don't really remember it very well, but it was very interesting and stimulating.
I didn't do particularly well at the subject, but I still feel as though I've gained alot from it.
Anyway, mabe thats what your getting at, mabe not.
Don't make me laugh .. bitterly
