I suggest you read Feynman Lectures Vol 1. There is a chapter in there with a very intriguing introduction to energy and the conservation of it.

From a broader more godly sort of view point, I'd say energy is the Potential to make a Change. The more energy you have the more doors are open to you to do stuff:

Knock an electron out of its potential well
Stop a train
Blow up the earth
Blow up the universe
Slow the explansion of the universe
Reverse the expansion of the universe

If I think of a better generalisation of energy Ill let you know. Very deep subject.
