I don't know about the rest of your post as far as the water being sexual, personally I never heard of such a thing, and although the sirens did lead sailors to their death, the mermaids were rumored to actually save sailors who fell overboard. They were like mythological good guys... Most of the time. I'm sure there are a few stories of mermaid attacks, almost sounds funny, but the vast majority of the famous ones are of them helping sailors.
