of course they don't exist, that's fantasy. Just like the existance of dragons in many different cultures and eras, we can chalk it up the human psychology. We tend to combine different things to produce similar fantasies. A dragon is a combination of a few different animals. A mermaid is a combination of a man/woman and something least like them - fish.
