While it is my stance that guns should not be handed out to the average citizen, I don't like the precedent this sets. What if someone then sues to see the membership of something like a LBGT group. However, the government still should have this data, if only because it helps with crime fighting.
The media idiots are not the government and there is no valid reason for the government to have this data unless law enforcement is investigating a particular case and they get a warrant from a judge (based on probable cause related specifically to the person or group being investigated).
