I read in another article the bike they were on was stolen to boot.
but the riots probably got started by a misrepresnation/roumors about what happened. So instead of the cops patroling and the kids running into them and dying, the roumor went the cops shot at them, chased after them/whatever.
Regardless I hope sarkozy handles this well.
