| Social Bias on the campus Why does it seem that we defend the actions of the glitz and glamour crowd while attacking anyone who isn't part of the "in crowd?"
Recently at another campus here in CT there was a girl who fell from the upper level of one of the campus garages. For days e-mails have been sent out, even across the state here in Stores (UConn) We have been getting updates. Never has the cause of what happened been brought into question. Instead it seems everyone has been all up in arms about sending their love and support, connecting if your touched or depressed by this event, contact campus ministry or social services if your think of killing yourself....
From the president: Even though I spent several hours last evening at the hospital with the family of Cherolle Brown, I can’t begin to express to you the grief they are experiencing. I returned to the hospital earlier this morning to try to learn more but, as is appropriate, the hospital was not able to provide me with any further information. I want to assure you that Cherolle’s family will continue to receive our support.
This incident has also deeply touched the campus, and I do want to say that the response yesterday from all corners of the University was excellent. Professor Charles Mate-Kole gathered Cherolle’s friends and spoke with them and listened to their concerns. The director of Counseling & Wellness Tim Corbitt, Victoria Ginter, the Campus Ministry and others in the office of Student Affairs under Dr. Margaret Toston’s leadership reached out to students and friends in Cherolle’s residence hall and elsewhere. And the University police are doing an excellent job on their investigation. I thank everyone for the assistance they have provided and for the ongoing support that I know many are providing as I write this.
As our prayers and hopes go out for Cherolle, we also need to remember the University community needs to support her friends and classmates. If you see someone who needs help, please point that person in the right direction. We don’t always recognize that we may need emotional support—in response to this crisis or out of our own emotional or psychological pains—we should not be afraid to ask for help. There are many services and interventions available on campus, and the Office of Counseling and Wellness (832-1945) and the Campus Ministry (832-1935) are increasing their availability during this time. We will do everything we can to attend to the needs of students, faculty and staff.
With the upcoming Thanksgiving break, I hope that each and every one of us, while we are thinking about Cherolle and her family, will truly recognize our own blessings.
Jack Miller
President
Ok well to those of us lucky enough to know this girl, she is a sorority girl, and the night in question was on the upper level of the garage because its where she and her friends were pre-gaming while waiting to meet up before heading into the city for the night (Hartford = city). She was drunk and fell off the edge. Oh poor her, she got what she deserved.
So why is it that bit of info will never be public? Yet if these had been black students or kids from a ghetto town they wouldn't have been given 5 minutes of news time. Makes me really hate society and the way we worship the supreme white upperclass race. What do you say to an atheist who sneezes?
