You answered your own question, they're amateurs. In the real world, a professional would only carry an untraceable weapon and would dispose of it in pieces nowhere near the crime scene.
In the movies and novels, it provides a means for the "bad guy" to eventually get caught and shown to be the killer. It's become a cliché.
