If I was in that situation, I wouldn't try and cover it up, I would fight and dispute the claims, explain my side of the situation and make dam sure my side is more solid then whatever speculations were given by the media....
I wouldn't stop the press from releasing the information, I'd let them go ahead, release the info.... and then I'd sue the living b-jesus out of them for slander. I imagine after it was all over a few people would be out of a job and I'd have a bit more pocket change.
