I am not Asian, but I have noticed when my family goes out to a dinner with my dad's business partner's family (who is Asian), They would always take us out somewhere fancy, or serve fancy food at their house in a well decorated dining area.

he would also present us with gifts occasionally that were better then normal gifts would be.

This is different from say western culture where this is not practiced. So it is not too far off for a westerner to misconstrue the intent.
