I think that you have missrepresented how they think as a majority.
But some do.
Once at this workplace we were on break time and I was expecting the normal sermons from the other workers. When I said that I believed in the indwelling spirit instead of scripture they said I would go to hell.
But I was prepared this time. I had gotten some cola with ice cubes in it, unknown to then I had my finger on a ice cube and it had become num due to the frozen ice and had no feeling. When they said hell I took my ciggarette which was lit and hot on one end, I held it with only two fingers, the burning end being held with the my frozen finger. I held it that way for a long time while the finger was thawing out and said "Why should I fear hell, the fire cannot burn me, see, no scare on my finger".
The poor fellow nearly freaked out and acturally ran from the room "you are a devil" he screamed. The rest of the week no one talked about religion in the break room.
I still remember the look on his face. I count that little event as a hallmark point in my life. But they never talked much to me after that.
He was the bosses son so I soon was unemployed as well. But it was worth it.
I had grown up in northen USA and during the winter as a kid I would thaw my stocking feet out by putting them on the hot radeator heater.
So that is how I had learned about that little "magic trick".
