| I think she received hostile treatment because beauty pageants invite hostility: the women are generally hostile to each other, they are almost universally hostile to the general populace, and the pageants, with their idolization of shallow physical traits and their invitation to all to compare women based on those traits and declare winners and losers, create a generally hostile atmosphere. I'd boo pageant contestants, too -- the one I had as a student was one of the crappiest people I've ever known.
That being said, one thing I almost hate more than beauty pageants is the tendency of people to laugh at anyone who falls down. What are we, freaking monkeys? Why is this funny? Walking on two legs is hard, which is why most animals use more. Why do we take such pleasure in the humiliation of others?
