The Russians placed the plaque initially, and the Polish Communist government--not know for its pro-Jewish sympathies--replaced it. Few scholars of the Holocaust used the 4 million figure. They didn't need to. Auschwitz was one of MANY death and labor camps in eastern Europe.

Who ever claimed that only Jews died at Auschwitz. The claim is that MOST of the people killed there were Jews. If you want the figures, I'll provide them from Nazi German sources.
