My understanding is that its more to do with with the larger sports in the US like baseball and Anerican football stopping soccer from developing a foothold. There also just isn't the history and tradition behind football in the states that you would find in other countries. Baseball etc are seen as the traditional sports of north America with hero worship and tradition on a par with Football in the UK and Europe
