| You're definitely right about Bush's diplomacy skills. I meant that opinion polls in general ebb and flow, not specifically support for the war. I still maintain that OBL will show up later this year and support for the war will rise again.
There's a lot that has been riding on the WMD issue, you mention the threat allegations. Really Bush didn't stress the WMD until he started dealing with the UN. The UN had made a big deal about the WMDs with the inspections etc. I clearly remember Bush talking about hitting Iraq before Saddam became an immenent threat, not calling Saddam an immenent threat now, then. EVERYONE in the UN believed there were WMDs in Iraq, Saddam used them, then played a shell game with UN inspectors for several years before kicking out the inspectors. Hans Blix, certainly no Bush supporter, believed there were WMDs. Since troops entered Iraq last year, there has been evidence of WMDs, labs, hollowed out munitions, nasty water in the river... There are no actual weapons, true. But to say they never existed is rediculous, of course they did. Saddam WAS working on building a nuclear weapon, this is also incontrovertable. What is indispute is how close to actually having a bomb. Someone in this forum actually stated that Bush insinuated Saddam would have had a bomb in a few weeks, Bush never said any such thing. The time horizon is really not important, Saddam was trying to get a bomb period. With a bomb, it is highly likely that he would have sold it to the highest bidder. OBL, with a nuke would definitely have used it against the US.
I don't really like much of what Bush is doing but I am happy he is prosecuting this war on terror and I'm happy he invaded Iraq. I hope he is able to instigate the toppling of Irans current government and Syrias. Those governments are not worthy of diplomacy. |
