Paavo, I think it has to do with the fact that before an election both candidates and their parties are throwing so much dirt on each other that both sides become unbelievable at best. Another cognitive reaction could be to reject all evidence which doesn't fit your current believes. So once someone is a vivid republican or democrat, it becomes quite hard for that person to accept that the other side isn't all-"evil" and their side isn't all-"good".
