McCain was really just illustrating his point that we Americans refuse to do stoop labor. $50 per hour isn't realistic. But he ought to put his money where his mouth is anyway. Offer $15-16 an hour to pick lettuce and I think he will get all the American workers he needs.
But an illegal alien will not only work for a LOT less, his employer is also not required to provide any benefits, pay into the unemployment fund or pay ANY taxes on that employee. The employer can also skirt laws that require breaks after a certain number of hours worked, insurance against employee injury and he doesn't need to comply with OSHA rules or overtime regulations.
Many employers in this country pay a LOT more than just wages. They don't need to with illegals.
EXACTLY. And you have to count in that many of the illegals leave again or send the un-taxed cash back to family in Mexico. So most of the time it never returns into our economy the way it should. So here is the American worker. Getting paid $8-9.00 an hour. (Thats a good paying labor job btw.) Yet this worker lives in America, pays taxes, buys the crazy gas prices year round, and has the other living expenses that come with living in America legally. To shorten it up, the illegal coming in and working for $4.00 an hour prolly makes out better at the end of the season than an American citizen playing by the rules. And THAT is why American workers dont want to work for that low of a wage. Because you CANT LIVE on that kind of a wage. Trust me, I know first hand. I am hungry, my car is shit and I cannot afford to buy a new one, or fix my junk one for that matter. If it wasnt for my Grandfather owning a small apartment house.. My family would be homeless.
And to add to that these employers are greedy to start with, and it only gets worse with the more money they get. If they bring in anyone and let them work for a rediculously low wage like that it will, no, it has driven down wages for the people of this country. And FYI, the people of this country are NOT the few and the filthy rich. They are the average Joe's and Jane's you see everyday. The guy behind the counter, the driver of the delivery truck, the roofer, the builder, the digger and the other laborers.
There will be only one way to fix this. The American apathy and complancency must die. And like the Phoenix, a Patriot must rise from the ashes. A real patriot. DEMANDING representation and fair and equal treatment. Demand the right to pursue happiness. And that is something that seems far too out of reach for far too many of our average daily citizens.
