| The reason the statue stands in the Harbor is so she could show her light of freedom to the world that exists behind Lady Liberty's back. Close the borders and deport as you propose and her raison d'etre ceases. Might as well blow it up and sell the scrap or sell her to Disney - at least they could make some money from her.
The base upon which she rests was not part of the French gift. However, the words are carved there and that's what we say we offer in the USA. If not, sandblast off the words - they will then have no meaning so why keep them. And thanks for enlightening me as to where they come from.
That does not mean that if your proposal were to come about, the lady should come down. And all us immigrants can go back to where we came from. The Indians say they'll turn out the lights. |
