As I cannot with surety address what was behind his statement, I can only augment your assumption by adding he may well have been speaking of the use of drugs, general hygiene, the burgeoning attraction to socialist thinking, as well as what many looked at as the misguided actions of some war protestors. Many were no more informed then than Cindy Sheehan is today. I, too, grew up in NJ, Westfield and Bridgewater to be exact. Turbulence was not unknown in my neighborhood, but was not the overriding concern of the day. Most days guys were more interested in scoring some doobs and sating the munchies.
We’ll see where the judge wanders
Franklin Township myself. It was really a ugly time. Honestly the time spent on the Princeton campus was a break from the insanity taking place at Franklin High School(police cars being torched and rolled among other things).

I think you have to connect the dots here. Alito was a member of some ultra conservative group that tried to stop the admmission of woman to Princeton and supposedly had some kind of racial prejudice in it. Its hard to believe that he would forget a group that had this as part of its agenda.
