There weren't a lot of other people in first centruy Judea that could have. IN other words, there were the Jews, the Gentiles, and the Romans (who often overlapped with the Gentiles). Lets look first at the Gentiles. Why would they care about Jesus? He wasn't perverting their teachings or desecrating their temple. But to the Jews, this was a big deal. Jesus taught things that wee contrary to the Jewish belief system that had been in place since shortly after Moses' time.
It was the Sanhedrin, the Jewish court, that convicted and sentanced Jesus. Though the sentance of death could not be carried out by anyone but the Roman authority of the area. So the Sanhedrin sent him to Pilate, who ultimately carried out the death sentance.

Though it is true that the Jews, with the help of the Roman authroities, killed Jesus, that doesn't mean that Jews today are responsible for the death. On a more theological note, the first century Jews were no more culpable that Charistians today.
