The guy is in many ways a nut: he has an extremist view of the outside world and (like George Wanker Bush) believes he's on a mission from God.
But in other respects -- and this is where his political power comes from -- he's eminently sane. That is, he's a ferocious anti-corruption campaigner who strongly advocates a redistribution of wealth away from Iranian fatcat mullahs to the poor. As mayor of Tehran he impressed people by his spartan lifestyle. This guy has a strong political base at home, so we'd better forget any dreams of the Iranians backing down on things like nuclear weapons. They won't be listening.
