Sorry to go back on topic here but .... Great point, well made - THAT is exactly why they are doing it. I read somewhere recently (will try to find a link) that after an accident on a pleasureboat in Florida the court returned a recommendation that because of the increased occurrence of obesity in US citizens, the legal minimum size for a 'seat' would be increased by 4 inches to prevent this kind of thing happening again!
Related - it is illegal to NOT wear a seatbelt in the UK. When it was first brought in there were hissy fits from everyone about the infringement on their liberties and that the government was acting
in loco parentis or 'in place of the parents'. What the government argued was that if someone is too dumb to realise that NOT wearing a seatbelt is dangerous then they'd have to make it illegal. I guess you could say it was an infringement of liberties, but it reduced the number of people killed and seriously injured in road accidents and eventually everyone agreed that although they still didn't like the way it was implemented it was actually a good idea. Now everyone wears seatbelts.
Applying the same model to the argument that junk food is real bad for you if you eat it ALL the time, the Cal state government has decided that if people are too dumb or lazy to NOT eat junk food at every meal that THEY will ensure that growing kids who need a balanced diet get a chance to have one even if their fat-ass parents can't be bothered to roll off their lethargic asses and make 'em something healthy to eat.
Bizarrely enough there is a current public outcry in the UK over the poor standard of food in our schools and a call by PARENTS to the government to ban all junk food in school. I guess we're only so bothered about it because we pay taxes to fund the FREE health service and healthy people are sick of paying for unclogging arteries, heart bypasses and diabetes treatment for people who just don't know how to look after themselves - or should we just give in to our kids when they stand in the middle of the store screaming
wanna twinkie, wanna twinkie I WANNA TWINKIE' jeez!

Maybe you should look at the research that suggests that kids eating fatty preservative laden E numbers find it hard to concentrate and get poorer grades in school .... ?
