I think the solution is a mixture of ethanol run vehicles, solar powered homes and nuclear powered cities/factories/businesses etc.
All 3 are environmentally friendly and are [mostly] renewable. Ethanol can be from sugar cane, solar power, obviously, comes from the sun and nuclear products from the reactor can be recycled and reused, plus there are large amounts of them left.
