The reason there is filesharing is because the record companies are trying to take too large a chunk.
If books cost $1000 a piece for a paperback then people would be xeroxing them left and right.
Laws only work when the vast majority of people respect them and their purpose. Drug laws don't work because so many people don't respect them or recognize a purpose for them that only a tyrannical police state could hope to enforce them.
The same will happen with filesharing. 99.9% of people respect an artist's right to profit within reason from his or her work. They don't respect a record companies right to profit from an artist's work while relegating the artist themselves to indentured servitude. |
